The James A. Redding Nine-Iron swing-type sampler offers a cost saving method of extracting a sample directly from a moving conveyor. In its normal park position, over a moving conveyor belt, the counter-weighted stainless steel cutter rests at the top of its backswing. When activated, the electromechanical drive rotates the cutter through its swing in a perfect arc, extracting a cross-sectional sample cut that represents the material on the moving belt.
An adjustable wiper blade assembly mounted on the rear of the cutter and two adjustable garland idlers for adapting the customer's belt to the cutters radius help ensure that all material is deposited into the stainless steel sample chute. The cutter follows through and is stopped by the brake motor in its original parked position. Internal baffles are provided to prevent contamination of the sample, and a belt cradle is provided for mounting under the customer's belt.
Sample Processing:
For large flow applications, the extracted sample from the Nine-Iron swing sampler is fed by a belt feeder to a crusher. The crushed product is resampled by a secondary sampler to meet the needs of the customer, requirements and the guide lines of ASTM D2234 and D2013. The extracted sample is deposited into a single container or a pre-selected container on a multi-position sample collector. The reject material is returned to the main conveyor, reject storage area or a customer designated location.

The Nine-Iron swing sampler extracts a smaller quantity of primary sample than a conventional type "C" cutter, so a two-stage sampling system can be used in most situations. In many cases, especially on low tonnage applications, a single-stage system can be used.
And, if you're looking for flexibility, the Nine-Iron has it. While applicable to new conveyor installations, the Nine-Iron swing sampler also lends itself to easy retrofitting on existing conveyors. A really cost effective solution for today's sampling needs.
The Nine-Iron Swing Sampler is often used on its own when the customer has a low tonnage application or for a spot check of material quality. A stand-alone unit can be provided with a self contained control panel, complete with a motor starter and PLC control for timing functions.
